It was confirmed about a week ago that Aaron Taylor-Johnson (star of Kick-Ass) will play the role of Quicksilver in the upcoming “The Avengers: Age Of Ultron” (Avengers sequel) in 2015.

There were rumours and speculation that Taylor-Johnson would play the role since the announcement of some other casting news (James Spader as Ultron) arose about the upcoming superhero sequel.

Taylor-Johnson will be playing a young Quicksilver and be accompanied by the character’s sister Scarlet Witch (played by Elizabeth Olsen).

Now, there’s a couple odd things about this casting news:

1) From lovers to sister and brother

Both Taylor-Johnson and Olsen waited to announce that they officially were signed on to play brother and sister (in the Avengers sequel) until they confirmed they would be able to balance filming (for Avengers 2) and promoting their upcoming Godzilla flick, in which they play lovers…

To someone who a) doesn’t know anything about the characters Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch OR b) doesn’t know anything about Aaron Taylor-Johnson would think the news that he (Taylor-Johnson) would go from playing someone’s lover (Olsen) to playing their brother would be creepy just because the roles are completely different…

a) Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch’s relationship:

BUT let’s look at the characters (Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch) relationship in the comics:

In the main story line of comics, they’re brother and sister, and later you find out that they’re Magneto’s children. Not so weird. But in the Ultimate comic story line (Ultimates 3 – to be more specific), Wolverine sleeps with Magneto’s lover Magda to get revenge on him, and Magda gives birth to two children (twins): Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. Not weird yet… Here’s where it gets weird:

In the comics (Ultimate 3) Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch have an investors love affair while Wolverine watches from under a hedge… Super weird.

Now, looking at (1) the costumes and (2) the characters in The Avengers movie, one could assume they are using bits from the Ultimate Universe, check it out:

Not that anybody wants to see incest in a superhero movie, but the way the characters (in the previous Avengers movies: Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, and The Avengers) are set up, Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch could be “Ultimate” versions of their characters.

2) From best friends to being the same guy – just in a different universe

Both Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Evan Peters were in the first Kick-Ass movie (Peters got replaced in Kick-Ass 2). They played best friends and now, both have been cast as Quicksilver (Taylor-Johnson in the Avengers franchise and Peters in the X-Men franchise).
