Liam Neeson explains why he said no to playing James Bond GoldenEye

Liam Neeson has been promoting his new action-flick Non-Stop, and in an interview with the Hull Daily Mail, he discussed how his life would have been very different if he had played 007 in GoldenEye to take over for Timothy Dalton.

More recently, Neeson has gained (even more) fame with action-trhillers like Taken, Unknown, and his latest Non-Stop, but he could have had the action credit much earlier if he had played 007 when Eon Productions wanted him to.

Although he would have taken the role, at the time he couldn’t.

“I was heavily courted, let’s put it that way, and I’m sure some other actors were too… It was about 18 or 19 years ago and my wife-to-be said, ‘If you play James Bond we’re not getting married!’ And I had to take that on board, because I did want to marry her,” he recalls, smiling.

With Timothy Dalton retiring from the Bond role and Liam Neeson turning it down, Eon Productions went back to talk with Pierce Brosnan who had first been offered the role in the mid-80’s but had passed due to commitments to TV series Remington Steele. Luckily Brosnan decided to be Bond, because (in my opinion) is the best Bond there’s been. I think Neeson would have been an interesting choice, but I’m kind of glad he decided against it, because who knows what Neeson would have done after GoldenEye, meaning would he have even done Taken, or Non-Stop?

Would you have watched Liam Neeson as James Bond? What did you think of Non-Stop? Any thoughts on Neeson’s career?
