The Fast & Furious franchise is about to get a whole lot larger. Expect some prequels & spinoffs to come your way soon enough.

The franchise is one like no other. It started as a simple racing theft movie where the bad guys are actually the good guys, and now it’s a seven movie multi-billion dollar franchise that truly won’t slow down. Universal Studios has decided that the franchise doesn’t just deserve one story line with a handful of sequels, but an intricate expansion of that universe (much like the Avengers), but with more prequels & spinoffs than solo movies.

The Spinoffs:

Dwayne Johnson has stated in interviews before that plans for a spinoff involving his character Hobbs are likely to happen. I wonder what it would be about – his military background, an adventure of his own, possibilities are endless!

Tej (Ludacris) and Roman (Tyrese Gibson) are the two funniest components of the franchise when they play off each other in scenes, so it would make sense that they could have a spinoff adventure of their own, who knows.

The Prequels:

Technically Tokyo Drift takes place after Fast & Furious 6, so in a way there are already prequels in the series… But the studio is looking to make prequels of other sorts, other stories. Who would you want to see in a prequel story for Fast & Furious?

The Trilogy Model

All the Fast & Furious movies are connected, but the formation of these films is already intricate enough with their Trilogy Model of story-telling (not to include a couple short films), that these spinoffs & prequels will surely complicate things. As it stands, the first trilogy (1-3) is the introduction series: we are introduced to Dom (Vin Diesel), Brian (Paul Walker) & Sean (Lucas Blackwell). The implication is that Lucas Blackwell will return for future Fast & Furious films, seeing as the main storyline has caughtThe middle trilogy sets up the relationship between the group and Dwayne Johnson’s Hobbs. By Furious 7 (The beginning of a new trilogy) Hobbs is part of the Torreto family and Sean (Lucas Black) meets with Dom – meaning possible future relations. As well, Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell) is heavily involved – likely to return as well.

AS for spinoffs & prequels for the series – I believe it’s already interesting enough, but I can’t wait to see what they choose!
