Rambo: New Blood, a father-son TV series is being delivered from FOX with Sylvester Stallone returning in some capacity, which in turn means a fifth instalment in the popular franchise has been put on the shelf for the time being, according to Deadline.
After lengthy negotiations, Fox has closed a development deal for Rambo: New Blood, a TV series based on the hit feature franchise, with Sylvester Stallone executive producing. (Source Deadline). The report is second-hand information as it has not been confirmed yet whether or not Sylvester Stallone will solely be executive producing or will portray Rambo & teach his son his ways.
However, this is not the first time word of a Rambo TV series has been brought into development as Nu Image/Millenium Films, which have the rights to Rambo, and eOne had originally teamed-up to develop a series based on the character back in 2013. The production studios had intended to make the series available to the U.S. audience & internationally.
How Beverly Hills Cop Jeopardized Rambo’s Chances
Although, this was around the time CBS had their proposed Beverly Hills Cop TV series which would focus on the son of Eddie Murphy’s character Axel Foley. The pilot episode failed to grab audience approval (the studio was hoping for) as fans may have been disappointed the show focused so heavily on Brandon T. Jackson as Aaron Foley, and so little on Eddie Murphy’s original character. Stating that Murphy would only occasionally make appearances on the show, but it was meant to standalone. The studios that were interested in producing a similar Rambo series pulled the plug for the time being.
Rambo: New Blood Is Great & Terrible For The Rambo Franchise
While fans may be excited for a TV series called Rambo: New Blood, they shouldn’t to get their hopes up, as Sylvester Stallone has been trying to make Rambo 5 happen for a while & the success of the TV show could determine the franchise’s future. While Sly Stallone recently almost seamlessly transitioned his Rocky franchise into the hands of a younger, more capable franchise handler (Michael B. Jordan in Creed), the same may not be possible for the Rambo franchise. Especially since Sylvester Stallone has made it perfectly clear that he would reprise the role of Rambo one final time to give the character a proper send off in a final Rambo film, cleverly titled Rambo: Last Blood. Not only would the movie be incredibly badass, but the film would be a nice finale for the unbelievable warrior known as Rambo.
Now here’s why it’s simultaneously great & terrible for Rambo (in the future): finally a TV show where Rambo can perhaps teach his son J.R. to be like him through some sort of hostage situation in the deep jungle, and we will get Rambo on TV a couple weeks in a row. The TV series’ intent very well may be to hand the machine gun & hunter’s knife from father to son. Which means that if the show does well, Rambo 5 gets delayed to focus on the show, but if it does poorly, Rambo 5 might be on the shelf a lot longer.
Is A Rambo Reboot Destined To Happen?
Which brings me to the fact that when asked who he would pass the torch (in this case gun) to if Rambo were to be rebooted, after being compared to how Rocky transitioned into Creed, Sly Stallone’s first response was Ryan Gosling.
The success of this Rambo TV series has an incredible influence on whether or not Rambo 5 even happens, Sylvester Stallone passes the franchise (like he did in Creed) to an up & comer that can continue the franchise in a different direction.
What are your thoughts on the future of the Rambo franchise? Are you that interested in the series to see any further developments? Would you be interested in seeing Ryan Gosling takeover Rambo the way Michael B Jordan did for the Rocky franchise (in Creed)?
