Universal Pictures has green-let a sequel to the surprise money-maker “The Purge”. With the low-budget, the controversial plot and the limited selection of stars, one would not suspect a sequel, except the movie made 12 times the original budget on it’s opening weekend, so Universal is planning a sequel that will come out June 2014.
The film’s original budget was just over $3 million, and overall, the movie pulled in over $87 million just at the box office.
If you haven’t seen the movie, ScreenRant.com explains it the best:
“The first film is based in an alternate version of America where crime, poverty and unemployment are kept under control by an annual Purge: a period of 12 hours during which all crime is legal and citizens are free to take violent revenge on their enemies, or simply let loose and live out their most sadistic and rage-filled fantasies. The wealthy can afford high-tech security to keep the riff-raff out of their homes, while the lower classes are culled in the chaos.”

ScreenRant.com went on to say that (at a press-release) Universal stated that “the next chapter of ‘The Purge'” will be out June 20th, 2014 in theatres. Filming will start in mid-December in California.
Director, writer and producer James DeMonaco will return for the sequel through Jason Blum’s production company Blumhouse and Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes. According to James DeMonaco’s representatives, he will begin shooting a movie entitled “The Zone” in mid-December. ScreenRant.com has a theory that this will be “The Purge” sequel’s official title. There is no confirmation of that at the moment, but that would play along with the theme of the first movies title:
– The Purge
– The Zone
That could work.
The question then becomes what will the sequel be about?
Seeing as the two main opposing characters Ethan Hawke as James and Rhys Wakefield as The Polite Leader both (SPOILERS) die, the plot would not include them as headlining the sequel.
If the title is accurate (The Zone), we could probably assume that the Sandin family finds or creates or founds a safe-zone, or perhaps (in a more twisted thought) a fight-zone. A gladiator like stadium where people fight to survive while the Purge goes on for 12 hours… Perhaps the sequel could prove to take ideas from movies like Predators or Gladiator. Or even on a darker sense, The Zone could be a section where the Purge goes on 24/7…
What do you think the sequel’s plot could be? What about the first movie? What do you think of the (possible) title?
