The general plot, according to Rob Corddry (who spoke out about the film on the Howard Stern Show) is as follows:

Corddry said that the group will head into the future where they’ll run into Adam Scott, who’ll be playing the son of Cusack’s character. Most of the story will take place 10 years in the future, but because the budget is lower than that of the first movie, the sequel plans to explain that not much has changed in the last decade to avoid spending money on “advanced technology”…

According to WorstPreviews.com, Corddry also mentioned that the sequel could be named “Hot Tub Time Machine 3: Because Hot Tub Time Machine 2 Hasn’t Happened Yet,” but the marketing department killed that idea weeks before filming started, apparently.

Well, I guess adding Adam Scott as John Cusack’s son explains why Cusack isn’t involved (I guess?), but how can it be 10 years in the future if Adam Scott is 40… And in the first Hot Tub Time Machine, Cusack’s character didn’t have a 30 year old son…

Plot holes are already starting to get bigger… But I’m sure all will be explained within good time.
