Last week, Arnold Schwarzenegger said in an interview that he is in talks to return to the Terminator franchise for the next movie: Terminator 5 (no official name yet).

Originally, when Arnold told everyone that he would be in T5, many fans speculated that Arnold would be too old to reprise the role of the Terminator, so it was rumoured that Arnold would be playing a military officer whose likeness is used in creating the 850 series Model 101, a.k.a. the T-805 and the T-101 (sometimes referred to as the T-800).

“A report from Examiner (dated June 7th but nobody noticed it until today!) claims that one idea for Terminator 5 is for it to be set in the 1940s and 1950s, focusing on a Terminator(s) travelling back in time to kill a target, most likely Sarah Connor’s parents, thus attempting to wipe the original film’s protagonist out of history before she was even born. Arnold Schwarzenegger would play a “heroic human figure” that attempts to save the Connor’s… his bravery and effectiveness with antiquated weaponry the explanation for what inspires the machines to use his likeness for future Terminators.”

(Matt goes on to explain that if the Dwayne-Terminator succeeds in killing off the 1940’s Connors, this would allow for a reboot of the franchise, much like J.J. Abrams’ reboot of Star Trek – starting over, on a different timeline…)

BUT, that is just one version of the script, & it seems to be that Arnold wants to return as the iconic role – The Terminator, if you have seen the Terminator quadrology, you would notice that Arnold did not technically appear in T4, but his likeness did, with the help of CGI, so this is still a possibility – much like Jeff Bridges in Tron: Legacy.

When prompted as to which character he was more excited about returning for (Conan or Terminator), Arnold said this:

“Well, I don’t think there is one character (I can chose from) even with all my other movies…Like for instance, I’m getting the script in two weeks from now about the sequel to Twins, which will be called Triplets. So for me, that character was a fantastic character. So I can’t say the Terminator character is more than this character or the Conan character I like less than the Terminator character or something like that. They are all great characters. Like I said, I was very fortunate to be able to play those kinds of characters who have an international appeal. To me, that’s the most important thing.

In fact, I’m very happy that the studios want me to be in Terminator 5 and to star AS the Terminator, which we start shooting in January and I’m also going to do King Conan, to play that role and also to do another Twins movie. So I feel very proud of that. I feel very happy and I’m looking forward to doing those films.”

Filming will start (like Arnold stated above) in early 2014, maybe even January, and Terminator 5 will be the first of these three sequels (Terminator, Conan, and Twins) to go into production.

Currently, Dwayne Johnson is filming “Hercules: The Thracian Wars” in Hungary, so the schedule will work for both actors.

Patrick Lussier and Laeta Kalogridis are writing the screenplay, although no director has been attached yet. Justin Lin (director of Fast & Furious 6) was in talks, but that seems to not have gone through.
