Spring Breakers came out March 22 (in U.S.A.) and March 27 (in Canada).
The movies tagline is “Good Girls Gone Bad”
Just in case you don’t know what I’m talking about here’s the poster:And here’s the trailer
Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens and James Franco star in this indie spring-break themed movie about 4 college girls that rob a store to pay for their spring break vacation. But the movie got an R-rating, so it’s pretty obvious the target audience isn’t Selena Gomez’s usual Disney crowd (little girls aged 10-15)…
She even warned her younger fans to not see Spring Breakers when it comes out:
“I’ve done my best to warn the parents and my younger fans. Iʼll be 21 this year so for me itʼs been kind of refreshing and nice to step out of my comfort zone and do things that I didn’t think I could do as an actress.”
Selena is apparently trying to distance herself from the Disney fan club she currently has following her, and breaking that barrier is difficult, and this might be the easiest way to distance herself from her Disney show (“Wizards of Waverly Place”) image. Opposed to her cast-mate Vanessa Hudgens who had her Disney-all-access pass revoked because of the whole photo scandal thing. But I don’t want to get into that.
The film also stars James Franco as “Alien”
His character “Alien” bares a strange resemblance to exotic singer “Riff Raff”, but Franco claims he based his image off of Miami rapper “Dangeruss” who he has a scene with in “Spring Breakers”, but Riff Raff claims Franco stole his image 100%…
Riff Raff stated in an e-mail blast to MTV on calling Franco a liar:
“The storyline ain’t mine but no one on Earth can deny that James Franco’s image and appearance characteristics are Riff Raff all day,”
Here’s an interview with Riff Raff after he saw the movie, and how he and Franco compete to have the nicest and most expensive things…
Besides the Franco-Riff Raff controversy, the movie has another controversial side to it: the “Good Girls Gone Bad” slogan is about the former Disney stars turning to roles where they steal money, do drugs, drink and do inappropriate things bikinis.
It’s a wonder that this sort of movie hasn’t been made earlier, with all of the Disney stars that have “gone bad”… It seems Disney stars either get forgotten or remembered badly
The movie has so far been met with much dismay, but somehow the movie made more than expected in theaters, exceeding expectations by over $4 million.
But remember, the movie is R rated, and is not appropriate for younger viewers, especially those who are fans of the Disney stars because of their Disney roles.
What are your thoughts guys: Should a movie with Disney stars be made about scandalous and illegal behavior? Are they sending the right message? Has it made that much money because of the obvious, or is the movie actually worth seeing?
