After watching STAR WARS: The Force Awakens for the 3rd time, my most pressing unanswered question is: Just who is Supreme Leader Snoke?
There will be potential SPOILERS.
Clearly Snoke is old enough to have existed throughout the Original Trilogy & maybe even old enough for the prequel trilogy, but really who is he? How is he this all powerful being, worthy of creating The First Order out of the ruins of The Empire, in control of General Hux’s stormtrooper army & the most feared (living) Sith – Kylo Ren? Did he only become the most powerful out of default because Darth Vader & Darth Sidious were out of the picture? Did his rise to being the leader of everything Dark & evil happen because of opportunity and he truly is a new character that just waited for the right moment?
OR is he a familiar (but now disfigured) face under a new name?
Who Is Supreme Leader Snoke? 5 Most Insane Theories
1. Time Traveling Kylo Ren
To start off this crazy theory list – What if Supreme Leader Snoke is the ultimate evil version of Kylo Ren from the future, communicating via hologram to teach & direct his younger self to become a more powerful Sith earlier? The idea here is that Kylo Ren is constantly being pulled between the light & the dark side of the Force throughout the film. Up until the point that Snoke convinces him to deal with Han Solo… So what if, Kylo Ren was actually meant for a path of light but his darkside eventually rips itself out of him & is so powerful with the Force it literally creates a new body for itself? Supreme Leader Snoke could be the embodiment of Kylo’s Dark Side. Here’s where it gets even a little more crazy – the theory is that there will be even more parallels between the Sequel Trilogy (7-9) & the Original Trilogy (4-6). Starting with a scene rumoured for Episode 8 that will echo the scene from Episode 5 (both the 2nd in their trilogies). Darth Vader asks Luke to join the Dark side: “If you only knew the power of the Dark Side. Obi-Wan never told you what happened to your father.” Luke responds “He told me enough! He told me you killed my father” Darth Vader: “No, I am your father”
In Episode 8 it is theorized that a scene will mirror this one, to the point where it ends in Snoke saying to Kylo Ren “No, I am you.” The only evidence to this theory is that Snoke & Kylo Ren have similar facial scars, thanks to Rey & that Episode 8 director Rian Johnson made Looper, the time-traveling assassin movie where Joseph Gordon-Levitt has to kill his future self…
It’s definitely interesting, even if it’s not that plausible.
2. Darth Sidious Had A Fourth Apprentice
Darth Sidious/The Emperor/Chancellor Palpetine had many aliases & apprentices. According to the Prequel trilogies, Darth Sidious taught Darth Maul & Darth Tryanus before taking on Anakin to become Darth Vader. So it’s possible that he had a fourth apprentice in the background that’s doing his bidding, continuing what Sidious & Vader were working for, but with Kylo Ren. The problem here is that Star Wars: The Force Awakens takes place 30 years after Return Of The Jedi, in with Darth Sidious is killed by Vader. Meaning that Supreme Leader Snoke appears simply too old to be a fourth apprentice of Darth Sidious’. Where as it’s simply much easier to imagine he’s the one who taught Sidious everything he knew.
3. Darth Sidious’ Master Darth Plageuis
This one has a little weight to it. In Revenge Of The Sith, before revealing himself to be the Sith lord, Chancellor Palpatine tells Anakin the tragedy of Darth Plageuis – a Jedi so powerful in the ways of the Force, both light & dark, that he could save the ones he loved. Once revealed as the Sith Lord, he confirms that Plageuis was his master & that he could teach Anakin how to save the ones he loved, just like Plageuis did. The sound tracks given to each character
*Side note: There’s also a wild theory that Darth Plageuis was so powerful in the ways of the Force that he was actually the one that created Anakin’s mother’s virgin pregnancy…
4. Darth Sidious Reborn
The theory is that Darth Sidious was never killed by Darth Vader in Return Of The Jedi, but seriously injured & scarred. Realizing that the Darth Vader lore was more powerful to Kylo Ren, he uses it to persuade him to continue what he starts decades ago.
This is theory is rightfully crazy as Sidious was seriously weak by the time Vader killed him, making this theory the 2nd least likely on the list. The most unlikely being:
5. Jar Jar Binks
The theory is that Jar Jar Binks is actually an evil mastermind who managed to convince everyone of his innocence although he ultimately was in Queen Amidala’s position in the Senate & gave ‘Emergency’ control of the Senate to Chancellor Palpatine who was in the end the Sith Lord. In all honesty I believe that Jar Jar was easily fooled & was not in anyway part of Palpatine’s plans.Jar Jar Binks is not some sort of evil master mind behind everything Sith related in the Prequel trilogy. And he most certainly cannot (and should not) be Supreme Leader Snoke. He was a goofy side character, that’s it!
